What is NLP?

If you search for one succinct definition of NLP, you will probably find none. (It’s complicated!) However, most definitions start with explaining the N, L and P of NLP.

N, or neuro refers to our nervous system, our neurology and how we take in information through our senses, what we see, hear, smell, taste and feel, both how we feel through touch and how we feel our emotions.

L, or linguistic refers to language and how we give meaning to the information we take in through our senses.  What we see, hear and feel becomes pictures, sounds and emotions which are then given meaning as we store the information in our neurology, our bodies, nervous system and memories.

P, or Programming is how we take all the information stored in our neurology and use it to create patterns of behaviors, or programs, that we run to help us live our lives efficiently and achieve our desired outcomes.

So, NLP is the understanding that our behaviors are based on information stored in our neurology AND that by a process of inquiry and being curious we can change our behavior by identifying and changing the neurological information which drives the behavior.
